Senior Product Designer

About the role

HandsUp is fundamentally a product design problem. The button has to work in the worst moment of someone’s day. The encryption has to feel calm, not technical. The lawyer match has to feel like a friend with a recommendation, not a marketplace. None of that happens without world-class product design.

You will be our senior product designer reporting to the design lead and working directly with engineering, product, and legal. You will own end-to-end design for major product surfaces including recording flows, evidence management, the lawyer network, and emerging surfaces like Apple Watch and CarPlay. We design in Figma, ship every week, and use real user research to drive every flow.

What you will do

• Own the end-to-end design of major product surfaces including the recording flow, evidence library, encryption status, lawyer match, and onboarding.
• Drive the visual system forward including typography, color tokens, motion, and the iOS and Android components library.
• Lead user research efforts on the surfaces you own, from interviews to usability sessions to instrumented quant analysis of in-product behavior.
• Collaborate daily with mobile engineers and product managers. You will sit in stand-ups, write tickets, and review pull requests for visual fidelity.
• Push the bar on interaction design. We want recording to feel inevitable, encryption to feel calm, and lawyer connection to feel earned, all in micro-interactions and motion.
• Make the product accessible by default, including support for VoiceOver, dynamic type, color contrast, and reduced motion.
• Help expand the brand identity into product surfaces, marketing, App Store assets, and onboarding emails as needed.
• Mentor junior designers as we grow the design team.

What you bring

• 6 or more years of product design experience with at least four shipping consumer mobile apps that people use every day.
• A portfolio with at least two end-to-end shipped consumer mobile flows that you can walk us through in detail (problem, hypothesis, design, results).
• Strong systems thinking. You think in components, tokens, and patterns rather than one-off screens.
• Excellent visual craft. The output of this role lives in front of millions of users and the visual bar is high.
• Fluency with iOS and Android Human Interface Guidelines. You know when to follow the platform and when to break with it.
• Comfort with research. You have run usability sessions yourself, written interview guides, and turned findings into shipped product changes.
• Strong written communication. You write design rationale that engineers and product folks can read and rally behind.
• Bias toward shipping. You ship in small slices and iterate after launch rather than perfecting in Figma.

Bonus points

• Background designing in legal-tech, fintech, healthcare, or other regulated consumer categories.
• Experience designing for safety-critical or one-shot use moments (the user has one chance to get it right).
• Motion and prototyping skills (Origami, Principle, Lottie, After Effects, or directly in code).
• Apple Watch, CarPlay, or wearable design experience.
• Background contributing to or leading a design system at scale.

The team you would join

You will report to our design lead and work in a small product pod with a senior mobile engineer and a product manager. The design team is intentionally small. We protect quality through high individual ownership rather than process. You will have exceptional autonomy over the surfaces you own and exceptional accountability for them.

Compensation and benefits

The salary range for this role is $190,000 to $240,000 plus meaningful equity. Range is determined by experience, scope, and impact. We benchmark against top-quartile cash compensation at comparable consumer startups and re-benchmark every year.
